Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Young Learners 

 

 

Abstract:  

Teaching EFL to Young Learners sessions is a hands-on session for teachers of English to Young Learners and Teens from around the world. The session will focus on activities that engage young learners. Teachers will use VoiceThread for student speaking, story reading, board games, limited resource classroom activities, Padlet for collaborative reflections, and Screencast-o-martic for video tutorials.   

 

Target audience:

 

TEFL2YL is designed for teachers, parents, caregivers, and everyone involved in teaching young learners and teens irrespective of context or degree of experience. 

 

Session objectives:

 

By the end of this workshop, participants will have: 

  • discussed challenges and activities involved in teaching EFL to young learners.
  • discussed methods of teaching young learners via VoiceThread, Videos, Story reading; Games; Arts & Crafts.
  • created activities using VoiceThread, story reading; board games; arts & crafts.
  • discussed student collaboration 
  • recorded their voices using PoodLL and recorder using their audio and webcam
  • added their reflections and feedback of the session on Padlet
  • created video tutorials using Screencast-o-matic to document their work.

Week 1: Jan, 11-18, 2020
Getting-acquainted and learning about the session tools

In week 1, participants will

  • become familiar with the layout of this platform 
  • get acquainted with the other members of TEFL2YL EVO20
  • get acquainted with the tools:
  • create own activities based on tools 
  • brainstorm and discuss topical issues of concern in teaching EFL to young learners around the world

 

 

Week 2:  Jan. 19-25, 2020

"The Magic in Reading a Book Aloud"

In week 2, participants will:

  • Learn and discuss the science of reading.
  • Discuss why and how reading aloud is an important tool
  • Explore the challenges in reading a book aloud in the classroom.
  • Learn and practice implementing the magic of reading a book aloud with interactive reading activities

 


Week 3: Jan. 26- Feb. 1, 2020

Games in the EFL Classroom [for Young Learners]

 

Lead Moderator: Nives Torresi

 

In week 3, participants will:

  • Learn and discuss the theory related to using Games in the EFL classroom
  • Discover types of Games and online tools for Educators to prepare lessons for their Classroom 
  • Take part in activities to practice implementing these games in the Classroom and share their work

 

 


Week 4: Feb. 2-8, 2020

 

Learning & Exploring English through UPCYCLING

Lead Moderator: Sheryl McCoy

 

In week 4, participants will:

  • Read about and discuss the TEFL foundation processes using Upcycling in the YL class 
  • Learn about and apply the information in Upcycling Tie Dye Day Lesson Plan Brochure 
  • Create an Upcycling lesson, document the process, and share on Padlet.  

 

 


Week 5: Feb. 9-15, 2020

 

Wrap-up ZOOM meeting and reflections on Padlet 

 

Lead Moderator: Nellie Deutsch

 

 In week 5, participants will showcase their work and reflect.

  • They will create videos of their work using Screencast-o-matic
  • Create a Padlet wall
  • Add the videos on the wall.
  • Share the link of their Padlet with the rest of the participants.  
  •  Take the final survey for EVO20
  •  Fill in the feedback form for TEFL2YL. 

Requirements:

Participants will be expected to have the basic skills necessary to facilitate communication via an online discussion group.
